Partnership with St. Jude inspires Elliott Homes’ mission.
When we first partnered with St. Jude to build our first Dream Home® in 2012, we met a young boy whose mother told me at our groundbreaking event that her baby had terminal brain cancer and had three months to live. A hard reality of life for many families today seeking help for their children. The only cure available at that time targeted the brain tissue around cancer cells which also would have progressively deteriorated his motor-functioning skills in the future. Needless to say, the mother’s options were very limited at the time on whether to proceed with cancer treatment or face the ultimate consequence most parents can’t ever fathom. She decided to march on and place her faith with the doctors and medical professionals at St. Jude. She did this fully aware it could likely result in her child’s passing. Over the course of two years and our Dream Home® campaigns, St. Jude developed a one-of-a-kind proton laser that can target a specific location of cancer without damaging the tissue around it. The young boy was among the first to use this new medical technology in the battle against cancer and it was successful. Because of the contributions made every day to St. Jude from private donors and organizations around the world, many families like this mother and special young boy are able to receive the proper treatments, room and board accommodations and entertainment at no costs to them.
Looking back, I could have never imagined the positive impact that our partnership and contributions have on the lives of young children and their families. When St. Jude was started, childhood cancer had a 4% survival rate. It is now up to 80%. Our passion for this hospital is helping them reach a 100% survival rate. The goal for this year is to raise $750,000 net dollars toward the fight against childhood cancer.
